About APL

Integrated lab medicine moves forward

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has made some changes to the governance of laboratory services across the province.

As of October 24, the name of the wholly owned subsidiary for laboratory services will be Alberta Precision Laboratories Ltd (APL).

The new name better reflects the current and future state of modern laboratory services and highlights the importance of laboratory medicine in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

The board that worked to establish APL has been dissolved, and has been replaced by a single board chair.

Mauro Chies, AHS’ VP of Clinical Support Services and CancerControl Alberta, will report directly to AHS President and CEO, Dr. Verna Yiu.

In addition, Craig Ivany is leaving his role as APL CEO. APL executive leaders Tammy Hofer (Chief Operating Officer) and Dr. Carolyn O’Hara (Chief Medical Laboratory Officer) will assume leadership for the organization. The CEO role will not be replaced.

We would like to thank Mr. Ivany and the members of the former board, who were instrumental in the formation of APL.

In the coming weeks, an advisory committee will be created to help guide APL leadership moving forward.
