Education & Training

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) is proud to collaborate with leading educational institutions to foster excellence in laboratory medicine. With long-standing affiliations with the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine, we contribute to the comprehensive training of medical residents in Diagnostic & Clinical Pathology (formerly General Pathology), Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology (formerly Anatomical Pathology), Hematological Pathology, Medical Microbiology, and Neuropathology. APL also supports sub-specialty fellowships in and accredited programs for PhD graduates in Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, HLA & Immunogenetics, and Clinical Genetics.

APL further expands its educational impact by supporting medical students through a dermatology rotation in collaboration with the University of Alberta's Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, as well as offering medical elective rotations for universities across Canada.

In partnership with both the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, APL also facilitates MSc-level training programs for Pathologists' Assistants. Furthermore, the University of Alberta's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology provides a three-year BSc program in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Beyond these university affiliations, APL has established partnerships with institutions like SAIT, NAIT, ABES, and Red Deer Polytechnic to deliver programs for Medical Laboratory Technologists, Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, and Cytotechnologists. These collaborative efforts ensure a comprehensive educational approach to developing skilled professionals across various disciplines in laboratory medicine.

In addition to its formal educational programs, APL offers unique learning opportunities through observership enrollment, providing practitioners such as physicians, dentists, podiatrists, the chance to observe processes and methods within APL facilities. Observership experiences are strictly observation-only, involving no hands-on experience, formal training, or assessment. These opportunities allow participants to gain insight into behind-the-scenes laboratory operations, enhancing their understanding of processes that can support their roles and scope within healthcare.

Together, these initiatives underscore APL's commitment to advancing education and developing the next generation of leaders in laboratory medicine.
