Commitment to Comfort

What is it?

Commitment to Comfort® is a quality improvement initiative adapted from the Alberta Children's Hospital. It was developed to promote comfort by helping lessen pain and distress in patients requiring a laboratory collection. While many strategies are aimed at pediatric patients, there are elements that anyone can use.

The strategies include using positive language about laboratory procedures, distractions, comfort positions and information about numbing products.

Where is it?

The strategies and tools described in the Commitment to Comfort resources can be easily applied during any collection visit at any location.

Commitment to Comfort strategies are offered within Alberta Precision Laboratories in Calgary and surrounding areas at the Alberta Children's Hospital and South Health Campus outpatient collection laboratories, at Calgary Patient Service Centres and collections site in Cochrane, Airdrie and Chestermere. Both Sundre and Lacombe Hospital and Care Centers lab collection sites also offer support with Commitment to Comfort options. The preliminary work done at ACH was the subject of a Patient and Family Centred Care Newsletter article (http://fcrc.albertahealthservices.ca/family/pfcc/newsletter/2019/03.php).
