Clinical Sections

The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (HLA) Laboratory is a state-of-the-art laboratory that provide services to support deceased and living donor transplant programs, including bone marrow, kidney, heart, liver, pancreas, lung, and islet cell transplant. Testing includes advanced molecular (DNA), antibody and cell-based methods to assess donor-recipient compatibility for transplantation. Other tests such as HLA disease association and HLA-pharmacogenetic testing are also performed. In addition, the laboratory supports matching for platelet transfusion and assists with other investigations related to platelet antibody testing.

Alberta has two laboratories: one in Calgary and one in Edmonton. These 24/7 STAT laboratories are accredited by the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).

In addition to clinical services, the laboratories are involved with various research activities.
