Transplant Laboratory

Clinical Sections

Alberta has two Transplant Laboratories located in Calgary and Edmonton. These laboratories provide 24-hour service to support provincial transplantation programs. Both laboratories are accredited by the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).

The Transplant Laboratories provide services to support deceased and living donor transplant programs, including hematopoietic stem cell, kidney, heart, liver, pancreas, lung, small bowel, and islet cell transplant. Other tests such as HLA disease association and HLA-pharmacogenetic testing are also performed. Support for platelet transfusion and other platelet antibody investigations is also available in these laboratories. Many different types of test methodologies are performed to support this work including advanced molecular (DNA), human leucocyte antigen (HLA) and human platelet antigen (HPA) antibody investigations, and cell-based methods to assess donor-recipient compatibility for transplantation.

In addition to clinical services, the laboratories are involved in research activities.
