Microbiology

Clinical Sections

Diagnostic microbiology laboratories provide extensive support to clinicians by aiding the diagnosis, treatment and surveillance of infectious diseases. Testing is performed on a variety of patient specimens, using a wide array of testing methodologies and detecting diverse pathogens. Major testing areas include bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology, and molecular diagnostics. Microbiology testing directs clinical management through targeted antimicrobial susceptibility testing and annual reporting of antibiograms for various hospital areas as well as ambulatory practice. Susceptibility reporting procedures are aligned with local Antibiotic Stewardship Programs to ensure appropriate antimicrobial use. Detection and tracking of antibiotic resistant organisms and other specialized testing is also done to support Infection Prevention & Control Programs in order to detect, investigate and prevent outbreaks within healthcare facilities. On call services are provided for clinical consultation to healthcare providers in Calgary, Edmonton and rural regions.
